Since the beginning of the 20th century, almost a score of churches and one synagogue existed in Whitney Pier. The places of ritual and worship have changed over the years; some buildings served more than one congregation, congregations moved as the need arose, and several original structures were replaced after destruction by fire. From City Directories, we know of other churches such as the "Coloured Church" on Henry Street and the "Union Coloured Church" on Laurier Street, but their locations are no longer evident. Also, during the 1940's, the Pentecostal Church, affectionately known as the "holy rollers", held services at various locations on Victoria Road.Today, there are eight active churches in Whitney Pier, three of which have been declared Heritage Properties under the Heritage Act of Nova Scotia.
