The Lyceum was built by the Roman Catholic diocese in 1904 as
an "Opera House" . The architecture was designed in the neo-classical
spirit of the time, and originally housed a gymnasium, library,
billiards room, and clubrooms, as well as a theater on the top floor
which seated 900 and was home to the St.F.X. Junior college theater
group. It should also be noted that the first showing of the Rise
and Follies of Cape Breton Island revue was held in the theater in
1977. Today the building is home to the Lyceum Museum,
the Museum shop,
visiting exhibits, the Cape Breton School of Crafts, and a small
public stage on the top floor.
