CHESTICO TARTAN
In the spring and summer of 1993 Mary (Smith) Macdonald and her two sisters Ann and Rachel designed and wove a new Chestico Tartan, which they presented to the Chestico Museum & Historical Society for original approval. The three sisters call Chestico their home and they have started a weaving business called "Three Sisters Weaving". They weave a wide range of Scottish Tartans and plaids, and take orders. They describe their Chestico Tartan design in the following manner:
Picture yourself in a
fishing boat a half-mile from Port Hood,
and the colours one would see are those in the Chestico Tartan
SAPPHIRE BLUE for the sparkling sea which is so much of our lives in Port Hood.
GREEN for our forest, fields and meadows.
BURNISHED BROWN for our sandy shores which earned the original name Mi'Kmag for Chestico which translates as "sand bar".
WHITE for the settlement of Port Hood. It has been said, "the white painted buildings" guides many fishermen back to shore!
The two strips of BLACK to remember our coal industry and our former railroad. The coal can still be found washed up on the shores of Port Hood from nearby veins.
Together the colours paint a picture of the blue water ebbing out from the sandy shores, and then into the green which is intersected by white and black.
