BACKGROUND

The building housing The Bridge/An Drochaid was built in 1874 and used as a store and assembly-lecture hall. Purchased by a series of owners, it was used as a dry goods and grocery store up until the 1970's. In 1980, the Mabou Gaelic and Historical Society obtained the building and named it the Bridge/An Drochaid, not only because of its physical location near the bridge crossing the mouth of the Mabou River, but also as a symbol of the connection between the past, present and future of the residents.

The Society has a number of facilities within The Bridge/An Drochaid. The museum displays artifacts and pictures that express some of our history, as well as information regarding current activities. Our archives contain a wide collection of local family histories, genealogical books, and census records from 1861 onward. The listening room contains taped interviews with various musicians of the area and selections of traditional Cape Breton music. The gift area offers an array of items for sale, from local crafts and music tapes to souvenir shirts and posters. You may even find Gaelic Christmas cards!

Throughout the year, The Bridge/An Drochaid hosts a series of events - ceilidh concerts, story telling, Gaelic conversation groups, and even an oatcake competition.

Come for a visit with us: we will greet you with "ciad mille failte" - a hundred thousand welcomes!
